1837 M7 founded.

Mystical 7 was founded at Wesleyan University with permission from its president, Wilbur Fisk. It was the first fraternal organization or society at Wesleyan and among the first in the United States. “The object of this society shall be the social, intellectual and moral improvement of its members.”

The society created The Caldron, Wesleyan’s first student publication, to share its members’ essays and poems.

1840 First women inducted.

In a meeting held under a large oak tree on August 7th 1840, women were initiated into the society, making it the first coed organization at Wesleyan*.

1861-1880 Dormant during and after the American Civil War.

The university closed and the Mystical 7 ceased to hold meetings or induct new members. Unofficially some students carried on as the Owl and Wand Society, but by 1889 decided to revert back to the original Mystical 7 name.

1906 Fire at North College.

A fire burns down the North College building on College Row, which served as both dormitories and university housing. On March 7, the Argus reports smoke had emanated from the Mystical 7 Society room, a furnished meeting space in the building’s attic, which the Mystics called the Templum.

1912 Second Templum Constructed.

Mystic alumni raise enough money to erect a brick heptagonal building for society meetings.

1995 A fire caused by an unattended candle destroys the Templum.

Members must once again meet in the attics of buildings on or near College Row.  


2017 Mystic Alumni raised enough money to erect the third Templum, to be used for society meetings and to host events on behalf of the wider campus.
